What I Know About - Conservation with Jan Bird

Join Jan Bird, former Conservator of Glass and Ceramics at the British Museum, for this special What I Know About session at the Portland Library being held during History Week 2017.

Jan became a Conservator as her third major career change. She started out training as a nurse with the RAF, followed by various nursing jobs at hospitals in the UK and Saudi Arabia, moving then into a more conventional “9 to 5” lifestyle and re-trained as a secretary, working for a local paper importer, then a solicitor, and finally Parfums Givenchy in the Executive Suite at their UK Head Office.

She had always had a keen interest in history and archaeology and in 1990 enrolled at West Dean College to study and graduate with a BADA Dip in Conservation of Ceramics, Glass and Related Materials.  Jan started work at The Department of Conservation at the British Museum in 1992 never looking back from there.  She has travelled abroad to work on excavations in Jordan and Gozo, been a lead conservator for an exhibition involving travel to Brazil and has worked at Hampton Court Palace.  After marrying a local Portlander, Jan arrived here in February of 2003 and has called Portland home ever since.

Jan will share what a conservator does, conservation verses restoration, some of the amazing places she has visited and how best to preserve, care and restore household glass and ceramics.

Participants are encouraged to bring along a glass or ceramic item from home they would like conservation or restoration advice about.  This is FREE event, with tea and coffee provided.
