Author Event - John Urquhart - Meet Japan

Join former local John Urquhart as he shares the history and personal stories behind his book Meet Japan.

Arriving in Japan in the 1970s was an eye opener for the young Urquhart family. They soon came to appreciate that beneath the western façade, Japan is still very much a country of ongoing traditions, culture, business forms and cuisine.

Based on forty-six letters selected from a collection of nine hundred written home over eight years, Meet Japan is a journey of enlightenment.

Born in Portland, John’s assignment in Japan was to market the range of Borthwicks Australia and New Zealand products and as the daughter of a commercial flower grower, his wife Lois became engrossed in the colourful seasonal nature of the countryside, the spiritual core of Japanese garden design, traditional art media and pottery.
